How To Cut Decorative Mats For Photos Fancy Cuts
Hi anybody, hope you had a great weekend! July around here is a crazy busy month, but actually the whole summer has been. :) But, I am so thrilled with how this latest project I finished upwards last week turned out. Like, it may be i of my favorite projects to date.
Retrieve when I had my Molding Link Political party dorsum in March? Well there was 1 particular project that was linked upwards by Dianne from The Inspired Housewife and it has been in the back of my listen to do ever since. Check out what she did to her doors hither it's gorgeous!
So here is our door before…
And after.
I just dear it. It added several inches of height to our plain architect door casing trim and added tons of graphic symbol. High v for architectural detail!
Now let me tell you something. I was pretty darn proud of myself after this. Yeah, yes I was. Why? Because I've never really cut crown molding and have kind of been scared to because everyone says it'southward so hard yada yada. But I'm hither today to evidence you how you can practise this as well, and NO, information technology'due south not that difficult. All it takes is a few moments of your brain working to recall nearly a few things, that's it. And in one case you lot practise it and go it right, it'll be like a easy the next time you need to cut some crown.
5 very important things to know nearly crown molding:
- Always cutting your crown upside downwardly on your saw. Usually when you have crown molding up on the ceiling, the virtually decorative part is on the bottom part. And then, when you are ready to cut, confront the decorative function up summit (yous'll come across a photo of this afterwards on)
- Always (most of fourth dimension) cut your crown standing upward, at an angle against the fence of the saw (you'll see a pic later).
- All of my cuts for this project were 45 degrees.
- Take your fourth dimension and retrieve before you lot cut. Crown molding is expensive :)
- Become a compound miter saw if yous can. I take a Ryobi and it was very affordable.
Now for the tutorial on making your doors mannerly and pretty!
I used a slice of MDF that was 4 inches wide I had on hand leftover from the paneled wall, cut information technology the length of the door and nailed information technology up.
And so I measured what length my crown needed to exist and cut.
(You volition set your saw at 45 degrees for both ends of the crown, just flip the direction of the 45 caste angle for each stop. Make sense?) Also notice how I'm standing up the crown against the fence of the saw and property tightly before I cut.
Here's the piece of crown after I finished cutting, and I got this right the very first try! Yay for YouTube videos and a few calls to my Dad to brand certain I was understanding what to practise.
Next you need to effigy out your side pieces. These did take a petty scrap of exercise to get information technology correct so just be patient. And buy extra crown. :)
Your side pieces volition have a 45 degree angles too, and also i straight angle (the side that touches the wall). So just cut your side pieces the same manner you cutting your big slice. Information technology volition fit together similar this.
Please note: When you cut your side or terminate piece, you will also cutting the crown upside down, Merely, for this cut you tin can only lay it flat on the saw since you need a simple direct cut. Similar this:
See how piffling of a piece y'all need to cut, where that red laser line is? Just measure to the back of the wall and to cover upwards your piece of forest above the door to get your measurement. It will exist pretty pocket-size if yous are going to practise this project.
Run across the straight cut? That side will be up against the wall.
Goodness, I know this is a long post and tutorial, simply I couldn't think of whatsoever other way to tell you lot all. This is detailed stuff and I kind of had to wing it myself since I couldn't observe a thorough tutorial anywhere online, so I'm trying to save yous the trouble. :)
Ok, and then once you lot accept the iii pieces cut, you are ready to assemble. The beginning thing I did was use some wood glue and attach the big piece to my piece of MDF, and then secured with a few finishing nails. Then I as well used wood glue for my side pieces, but practice not apply your nail gun on the small side pieces considering they are besides frail. Don't ask me how I know. :)
I used a minor thin piece of flat decorate trim to comprehend the seam betwixt the door casing and mdf.
So just caulk everything, spackle the smash holes…
And you're gear up to paint!
Then what do you think? We honey information technology so much! I can't wait to bear witness you lot the new living room wall either. Oh my. :)
And a next of the before and after…
Dear. :)
And also, you lot could do this projection with merely your miter box and saw. You will simply need to find a way to clamp it into place and stand it upwardly. I tried it out but didn't have the patience, so that's why I was determined to arrive work on the big saw. And it did! :)
You tin can as well cull any way of crown molding too. Mine was nearly 4 inches wide and I chose a more decorative one, only any style is fine. I paid effectually $15 for my piece of 8ft crown. Yikes. Simply it was well worth it. :)
If you lot accept any other questions go out them in the comments and I'll get back to you. And if I missed something I'll be sure and update the mail service.
Happy crown molding cutting!
P.South.-my nails that yous come across in the pics is the same shellac manicure I posted about a few weeks ago. Crazy huh?? Information technology'southward been 3 weeks to the engagement and I nevertheless take information technology on, just it's time for a new i. :)
